The Sheckler Heckler Interview .Words and Photos by Dean Randall
Ryan Sheckler pretty much kicks ass, but I probably shouldnt say ass because hes only nine years old and I wouldnt want to be responsible for exposing his virgin ears to such vulgar language. Maybe I can tell his Mom, Gretchen, to cross out the word ass before he gets the magazine. This interview took place in the Sheckler backyard in San Clemente, CA, after I skated the mini-ramp with Ryan and his six year old brother Shane, and kicked both their asses at a game of H-O-R-S-E.
Q. So, Ryan, should we call this the Heckler Sheckler interview or the Sheckler interview?
A. Umm...The Sheckler Heckler interview.
Q. Okay. So how old are you and who are your sponsors?
A. Im nine and my sponsors are... (he pauses and thinks deeply for a second, so as not to forget anyone) Etnies, Volcom, Clockwork Skateboards, Grind King, Arnette, Spitfire, IWS Boardshops, and Shortys Hardware (Ryan has almost 1 sponsor for every year he has been on the planet).
Q. Youre a pretty smart boy. What grade are you in?
A. Im in the third grade.
Q. Do you have a girlfriend?
A. Yeah.
Q. Whats her name? Is she in your class?
A. Emily. Yeah, shes in my class (he turns noticeably red).
Q. Do you like your brother?
A. Yeah.
Q. Do you guys ever fight?
A. Yeah, but just about stupid stuff.
Q. And you're going to have a new brother soon?
A. Yeah, in July. Were going to teach him how to skate!
Q. What kind of stuff do you like to skate the most?
A. Street and vert. Ive skated the Combi-Pool, its fun!
Q. Who are your favorite skaters?
A. Bob Burnquist for vert. For street, ummm... Whats his name? Arto Saari? Wait, no, not Arto Saari.
Q. Rick McCrank?
A. No. Whats his name? Oh thats it. Ed Templeton!
Q. Ed Templeton it is, then. Have you got to travel much through skating?
A. I went to San Francisco to skate the Warped Tour. I went to the Tampa Am contest and got seventh. Also Hawaii, just to skate.
Q. Does your Mom help you out a lot, driving you around and stuff?
A. Yeah, my Mom and Dad both help me a lot.
Q. Have you ever heard of Monica Lewinsky?
A. (Laughs) Yeah.
Q. What do think of the President?
A. I think hes stupid. I dont like him.
Q. Have you ever seen Heckler?
A. Yeah.
Q. Did you like it?
A. Yeah.
